In Spanish with English subtitles. Rated R, 107 mins.

Sweeping, poignant, bizarre, funny and unique, the film is vaguely reminiscent of the works of Jorge Luis Borges (Oleg Ivanov, Slant 2016). With a fondness for detective stories and magical realism with a wry sense of humor, mixing history and fiction, the film shows the dramatic events of the brutal repression of Communists in Chile in 1948. Senator Pablo Neruda, former ambassador and Nobel Prize-winning poet has to flee with his wife the painter Delia del Carril because of his outspoken criticism of the government and of the president Gonzalez Videla and is pursued by a relentless investigator (Gael Garcia-Bernal). A game of cat and mouse ensues in which Larraín brilliantly rethinks the ‘biopic’ and creates an intelligent, visually stunning reflection on the gaps between person and persona, history and legend. (Kieron Corless, Sight & Sound, 2016).
