The beauty and tragedies of China’s history are reflected in the lives of a handful of film fans in this historical drama from one of China’s newest cinematic voices. Mao Dabing (Xia Yu) is a delivery man working in a small village in rural China during the latter days of the Cultural Revolution. Mao is a movie fan who lives for the periodic outdoor screenings held in the town square. One day he is assaulted for no apparent reason by Ling-Ling (Qi Zhongyang), a young woman who gives him the keys to her apartment and asks him to look after her fish while she’s in jail. Though puzzled, he agrees, and discovers there a veritable museum of movie memorabilia The story later reveals that both share more than a love of old movies. The film’s reverent attitude towards the power of film and particularly classic film has brought it in comparison to, or at least reference to Italy’s Cinema Paradiso. “Joyous, unforgettable! A welcome gift to movie lovers everywhere.” -(This Week in New York)
